Fashion designer Anna Sui’s career-spanning exhibition opens Wednesday, Oct. 21, at Cranbrook Art Museum in Bloomfield Hills.
“The World of Anna Sui” features more than 100 looks from the designer’s archive at the museum, 39221 Woodward Ave. The traveling show, which debuted in London, runs through Feb. 28, 2027, according to the museum’s exhibition page.
The exhibition is a homecoming for Sui, who was born in Detroit and grew up in Dearborn Heights and West Bloomfield. Childhood visits to Cranbrook were a family tradition when relatives were in town, she told the Detroit Free Press.
“It was really my dream to have it in Michigan,” Sui told the Free Press.
Her two brothers raised their families in Michigan, and her four nieces and three nephews attended or are attending Cranbrook Schools, according to the Free Press.
The exhibition spans more than three decades of Sui’s runway collections, beginning with her first show in 1991. Clothing, textiles, accessories, cosmetics and photographs are organized around 12 recurring fashion archetypes: Americana, Androgyny, Fairytale, Grunge, Mod, Hippie/Rockstar, Nomad, Punk, Retro, Schoolgirl, Surfer and Victorian.
Re-created inspiration boards illustrate how she uses images to plan her designs, according to the Free Press.
The Cranbrook stop adds pieces new to the traveling exhibition. These include the black-and-yellow employee uniforms Sui designed for Jack White’s Third Man Records in 2012 and a babydoll minidress worn by singer-songwriter Olivia Rodrigo for her album art, according to the museum’s announcement.
Laura Mott, chief curator at Cranbrook Art Museum and co-adapter of the exhibition, said in the announcement that Detroit’s music scene helped shape Sui’s creative vision.
Kat Goffnett, associate curator of collections, said the show connects with visitors of different generations.
“It definitely will feel exciting and fun and fresh to a younger audience. But there’s definitely a lot of nostalgia hits for other generations as well,” Goffnett told C&G Newspapers.
Sui told the Free Press that her Sunday shopping trips during visits to Michigan include the Royal Oak flea market and vintage and antique stores in Royal Oak and Ferndale.
“The World of Anna Sui” opens Oct. 21 and runs through Feb. 28, 2027. Visit the museum’s website for hours and admission information.
