The Bloomfield Township Public Library, which serves about 800 visitors a day according to library officials, is headed for its first major renovation since 2008.
The Board of Trustees voted Tuesday, July 21, to approve the subcontractor and total bid package for a $7.7 million overhaul of the building at 1099 Lone Pine Road.
The vote moves the project from planning into active construction. Phase 1 begins Tuesday, August 25, starting in the Youth Services and Circulation Desk areas, according to the project schedule presented to the Building & Grounds Committee on June 11.
McCarthy & Smith, the construction management firm selected from five proposals in December 2025, prepared the bid package. Aaron Phillips serves as project director for the firm. About 30 contractors attended a walk-through on June 15 for prospective bidders, Director Tera Moon told the board at its June 16 meeting.
What it costs
The total project budget is $7,743,432.75, according to a June 8 memo from Moon to the Building & Grounds Committee. Hard construction accounts for $4.2 million, with furniture, fixtures, and equipment adding another $1.7 million. The remaining costs cover contingencies, bonding and insurance, permits, and professional fees. The primary cost drivers are lighting, acoustical treatments, and wall coverings.
What changes for patrons
The library will remain open during construction but has warned of reduced programming, limited access to collections, and unavailable meeting rooms. Work will be done in phases behind temporary walls.
Phase 1 runs 101 days through January 21, 2027. Phase 2A shifts to the Adult and Teen Services area and Computer Center, running from late January through May 5, 2027. Phase 2B wraps up by July 23, 2027.
The redesign includes at least seven new rooms. The scope covers new interior partitions, ceilings, millwork, architectural finishes, and flooring throughout the building.
How the project got here
"The library building was last renovated in 2008. With approximately 800 visitors daily, the building has seen change and wear on the furnishings and parts," Moon said at the August 19, 2025 board meeting when trustees unanimously approved the schematic design.
That August 2025 vote was unanimous, with trustees Keith Carduner, Dani Gillman, Judy Lindstrom, Joan Luksik, Joy Murray, and Shane Spradlin all voting yes. Spradlin serves as board president.
Bid packages went out June 3 with bids opened June 24. Moon told the board at its May 19 meeting that a recommendation would come in July.
The Friends of the Library have been asked to consider a gift of up to $100,000 for a Pewabic Pottery tile fireplace surround, a feature above the renovation budget.
