Bloomfield Township voters who requested absentee ballots should see them arriving after the township mailed all remaining ballots Thursday, Oct. 1.
The township announced on X that ballots not picked up in person were sent out that day. Residents who don't receive one can call 248-433-7702 or visit the Clerk's Office at 4200 Telegraph Road.
The Tuesday, Nov. 3 election features a proposal to authorize up to $50 million in bonds to build a new police headquarters and Fire Station No. 3. The Bloomfield Township Board of Trustees approved the ballot language at its Aug. 10 meeting.
For a home with a taxable value of $294,450, the estimated annual cost would be $128.96, according to the township's bond information page. The bonds would be repaid over a maximum of 20 years. If approved, construction could begin in 2027. The township estimates completion by 2029.
The current police building on Telegraph was built in 1938. Police Chief James Gallagher told WXYZ in September that the department has outgrown the space. "We are policing in 2026, in a building from 1938, added to in the 60's and again in 1998," Gallagher said in the Sept. 18 report.
An independent assessment found police operations need about 58,800 square feet. The existing building dedicates only about 17,000 square feet to police, according to the township's bond page. Fire Station #3 on 15 Mile Road serves roughly 46% of the township's residential population and handles more than 2,000 calls a year. The township has also secured $1.5 million in state grant funding for the new fire station.
Beyond the bond, the Nov. 3 ballot includes two statewide proposals: one asking whether to convene a constitutional convention and another that would prohibit campaign contributions from certain regulated utilities and government contractors. Voters will also decide on an Oakland County Zoological Authority millage renewal and a Southeast Michigan Public Historical Museum Authority millage.
Township Clerk Martin C. Brook's office has set several key deadlines. The last day to register to vote by any means other than in person with the clerk is Monday, Oct. 19. The last day to request a mailed absentee ballot is 5 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 30. Voters can request and receive a ballot in person at the Clerk's Office until 4 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 2. All absentee ballots must arrive by 8 p.m. on Election Day.
Three secure drop boxes are available: at Bloomin' Preschool (1101 Westview Road), Bloomfield Village Hall (3595 Bradway Blvd.) and Township Hall (4200 Telegraph Road).
