Bradway residents in Bloomfield Township should prepare to lose driveway access during work hours as contractor Allied is scheduled to begin milling asphalt along the full length of the street Tuesday, Oct. 20.
The milling is expected to take four to five days, according to an Oct. 14 construction update from Bloomfield Village Roads. During that stretch, no parking is allowed on Bradway. Residents must remove vehicles parked overnight on Bradway by 6:30 a.m. and move vehicles needed from their driveways outside the construction zone before 7 a.m. The construction workday runs 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Allied will provide golf carts to shuttle residents between their homes and vehicles parked on side streets. Residents can arrange a ride by calling 248-638-3190.
The intersection of Bradway and Lahser is expected to close fully around Monday, Oct. 19, and will stay closed until Bradway is paved. Cross-street intersections along Bradway will also shut down when milling begins because of a steep drop of up to 9 to 10 inches between side streets and the milled sub-grade.
"Please don't move the barricades and attempt to turn onto or cross Bradway after it has been milled; doing so may cause significant damage to your vehicle that will be your responsibility to fix," the update stated.
The Road Commission for Oakland County (RCOC) ordered the closures after several close calls with drivers during earlier phases of the Green Section project, according to the update. Bradway residents who need to reach their homes should enter from Cranbrook and drive slowly to their driveways when access is available.
What comes next
Once milling wraps up, Allied will spend a week or more grading the sub-grade. Driveway access during grading may be difficult or temporarily impossible during work hours. Crews may not be able to move equipment aside to let traffic through.
On Thursday, Oct. 29, Allied plans to pave the final layer of asphalt on Tuckahoe, Sunnydale, Hupp Cross and Morningview. Overhill will not be paved that day because trucks need that route during Bradway work. Overhill paving is expected in early November.
Allied plans to lay the first course of asphalt on Bradway the week of Nov. 2, with a second layer likely to follow shortly afterward.
Mail suspended, garbage pickup spotty
Bloomfield Village Roads reported in an Oct. 7 notice that the U.S. Postal Service had suspended Bradway mail delivery following damage to a mail truck. Its Oct. 14 update continued to flag the suspension. Bradway residents were instructed to pick up their mail at the post office at 2050 South Blvd., west of Opdyke Road. FedEx, UPS and Amazon deliveries appeared unaffected, according to the notice.
Bloomfield Township officials were working with the postmaster to restore service, according to Bloomfield Village Roads.
The construction update also reported missed garbage collections, saying some Priority Waste drivers had bypassed streets under construction. Residents who miss a pickup can report it at 855-927-8365.
