Birmingham retailers and restaurants are bracing for their biggest single-day surge of foot traffic as the Woodward Dream Cruise returns August 15, 2026, running 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. along the 16-mile Woodward corridor through nine Oakland County communities.

The Birmingham Shopping District, led by Executive Director Erika Bassett, organizes the Birmingham Cruise Event along South Old Woodward Avenue from Maple Road to Lincoln Street. Last year's event drew more than $65,000 in sponsorships, according to 2025 BSD board records, and required coordination across six city departments plus roughly 30 volunteers logging a combined 123 hours. The 2026 sponsor lineup and event guide have not yet been published.

The city's 2025 manager's report credited the cruise event with boosting downtown foot traffic and raising awareness for local shops and restaurants. A Birmingham Police Department annual report called the Dream Cruise the "longest one-day event" of the year for the city, requiring extra officers for crowd control and traffic safety.

For those planning their day, municipal parking is available in Birmingham, and SMART Bus will provide free shuttle service along the entire Woodward route from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Riders can board at any red SMART or FAST bus stop on Woodward Avenue. Past events have featured classic car displays, live radio broadcasts and interactive sponsor exhibits.

The festivities start a day early in Bloomfield Hills. Dream Cruising at The Kingsley, at 39475 Woodward Ave., is scheduled for August 14, with live music, a mechanical bull, a best-in-show car award, and kids activities including face painting, a rock wall and ice cream, according to The Oakland Press.
