Cranbrook's Japanese Garden, a historic landscape that rarely opens to the public, welcomes visitors on Saturday, August 8, when the MI Bon Summer Festival fills the grounds with taiko drumming, folk dancing, food trucks, and Japanese cultural displays for six hours.
The free event runs from 2 to 8 p.m., rain or shine.
Co-hosted by the Great Lakes Taiko Center (GLTC) and the Cranbrook Center for Collections and Research, the festival marks its fourth year on the Cranbrook grounds in Bloomfield Hills. The celebration began in 2021 as a small members-only gathering in Novi during COVID restrictions, then moved to Cranbrook in 2023. Attendance hit 500 that first Cranbrook year and jumped to 650 in 2024, according to Cranbrook Center records.
Free parking and a shuttle run from 550 Lone Pine Rd. (the Cranbrook Schools Performing Arts Center lot). Advance registration is available at center.cranbrook.edu; organizers have not specified whether it is required for entry.
What to expect
The main stage program features Bon dancing open to everyone and performances by GLTC's taiko ensembles, including Raion Taiko, Godaiko Drummers, and the new-for-2026 group Aozora Taiko. Bon Odori, the traditional folk dance at the heart of the celebration, honors deceased ancestors whose spirits are believed to return during summer. The MI Bon repertoire includes classic songs like "Tanko Bushi" and "Tokyo Ondo" alongside "Michigan Ondo," an original piece composed in 2021 by GLTC members Kyoko Johnson and Noriko Maidens.
Cultural booths staffed by community partners offer displays and hands-on activities for all ages. Past partners have included JACL Detroit, the Consulate-General of Japan in Detroit, Ikebana International Detroit, and the Ann Arbor Bonsai Society. Food trucks and merchandise vendors round out the grounds.
GLTC co-directors Eileen S. Ho and Larry An lead the Ann Arbor-based collective, which has taught and performed Japanese drumming across Southeast Michigan since 2009. Visitors are encouraged to wear festive clothing such as a yukata kimono or happi jacket, though all are welcome as they are.
