Democrat Sarah Pounds led Republican Roman Gaskey in Michigan’s Oakland County-based 54th House District, according to a Nov. 4 election tally.

Decision Desk HQ reported Pounds with 25,850 votes, or 52.9%, and Gaskey with 23,018, or 47.1%, as of 11:05 a.m. Nov. 4.

The seat opened after Republican Rep. Donni Steele chose not to seek reelection and instead ran for the state Senate, according to Bridge Michigan.

Pounds, a Lake Orion resident, has worked more than 20 years as a paralegal specializing in construction litigation, according to a candidate profile published by Downtown Publications. She serves as secretary of the Oakland Together Housing Trust Fund board. Her campaign website also describes service on county housing and community development boards.

She ran for Oakland County commissioner in 2022 and lost, The Oakland Press reported.

Her campaign priorities included reducing household expenses, expanding housing options, supporting public schools and improving access to health care. She also advocated stronger worker protections and safeguards for water and other natural resources.

During the campaign, Pounds joined six other Democratic House candidates in condemning harassment, The Oakland Press reported Oct. 27. She told the newspaper that campaign materials publicized her and her husband’s phone numbers, leading to unwanted calls and messages.

Bridge’s Nov. 4 report described Democrats as poised to regain unified control of state government, with at least 60 House seats and a potential 23–15 Senate majority. Some races remained unresolved in that report.

The new Legislature is set to convene in January.

Voters can follow updated returns through the Oakland County Clerk’s elections page. Results remain unofficial until canvassing and certification are complete.
