A 27-year-old Bloomfield Hills man remains in critical condition after a crash in Troy on July 19, that police say was caused by a speeding driver who ran a red light.
Mohamed Ali Ahmad, 21, of Troy, has been charged with one count of reckless driving causing serious impairment of a body function, a felony under Michigan law. He was jailed on a $50,000 bond, the Troy Police Department said.
The crash happened at 11:27 p.m. at the intersection of Big Beaver Road and Livernois Road. Police said Ahmad was speeding in a 2025 black Ford Mustang as he approached the intersection, ran the red light, and slammed into a gray Ford Fusion driven by the Bloomfield Hills man.
The victim was transported to a hospital with serious injuries. He remained in critical condition as of July 22, three days after the crash, according to police. His name has not been released.
What the charge means
Under Michigan law (MCL 257.626), reckless driving causing serious impairment of a body function carries up to five years in prison and a fine between $1,000 and $5,000. A conviction also triggers mandatory license revocation for at least one year and possible vehicle immobilization or forfeiture.
Investigation ongoing
Troy police said the investigation into the crash is continuing. Ahmad's next court date has not been publicly confirmed.
