Two 13-year-old Bloomfield Township boys were in critical condition Tuesday morning after a pickup truck struck the e-moto they were riding together on Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 7.

The crash happened at about 11:56 a.m. at Telegraph Road and Hickory Grove Road in Bloomfield Hills. The boys were traveling westbound on the safety path along Hickory Grove and were crossing through the crosswalk at southbound Telegraph when a Ford F-250 hit them, according to ClickOnDetroit, citing Bloomfield Township police.

Bloomfield Township Police Lt. Nick Soley told WXYZ that witnesses believe the truck had a green light heading southbound. "They just never saw this E Moto with the two 13-year-olds on it," Soley said.

The Bloomfield Township Fire Department transported both boys to area hospitals. One went to Trinity Health Oakland Hospital and the other to Corewell Health William Beaumont University Hospital. Both remained in critical condition as of a Tuesday morning update from WXYZ.

CBS Detroit reported one boy was wearing a helmet. The other was not.

The driver, a 35-year-old Rochester Hills man, stayed at the scene and is cooperating with investigators, police said. No charges had been filed as of Tuesday morning. The Bloomfield Township Police Department's Traffic Division and the South Oakland County Crash Investigation Team are handling the ongoing investigation.

Soley told WXYZ investigators believe the vehicle the teens were riding would be classified as an e-moto under Michigan law. Under that classification, devices capable of exceeding 28 mph with motor assistance are treated as mopeds or motorcycles and are barred from bike lanes, sidewalks and other pedestrian spaces, The Detroit News reported.

Bloomfield Hills Schools confirmed the boys are North Hills Middle School eighth-graders. The district sent a statement to families Monday saying it was working to put supports in place for students and staff. The crash occurred the day before school was scheduled to start.

Five days earlier, on Wednesday, Sept. 2, Bloomfield Hills Schools had published an e-bike and e-moto safety advisory developed with the Bloomfield Township Police Department. The advisory urged parents to discuss safe riding with their children and noted that e-motos are subject to different rules than standard e-bikes.

Soley told WXYZ the department's priority is educating parents, whom he described as the ones purchasing the devices for their children.
