Cranbrook Institute of Science's annual Women Rock Science gala has raised nearly $2 million for science education in underserved Michigan communities, and the Bloomfield Hills institution is preparing for its 9th edition on Wednesday, October 14, 2026.
Since launching in 2018, the women-led fundraiser has directed about $1.93 million toward outreach programs delivered by Cranbrook educators to thousands of Pre-K through 12th grade students in Detroit, Pontiac, Flint, Southfield, and other Michigan cities, according to the institute's event page. Last year's 8th annual gala alone brought in just over $333,000, surpassing its fundraising goal by more than $8,000. If this year's event performs similarly, the cumulative total would push well past $2 million.
The evening will honor three women making an impact in STEAM fields. Kimberly Kocsis, MiSTEM Region Director at Oakland Schools, receives the Outstanding Educator Award. Rhonda Walker, founder and president of the Rhonda Walker Foundation, takes the Outstanding Leader Award. Amy Peterson, co-founder and CEO of Detroit-based jewelry company Rebel Nell, earns the Rock Star Award.
Madeline Albright Bhavnagri, Rachel Arnesen Roncelli, and Yesenia Venegas co-chair the 2026 event. Adele Acheson and Linzie Venegas serve as honorary co-chairs.
The gala runs from 6 to 9 p.m. at the institute's Bloomfield Hills campus. Attendees get access to permanent exhibits and the traveling show "Artificial Intelligence: Your Mind & The Machine," along with hands-on STEAM activities, appetizers, and STEAM-themed cocktails. Programs funded by the event emphasize inspiring young women in STEAM careers.
