The Birmingham Fire Department's annual open house returns Saturday, Oct. 10, at Fire Station 1, 572 S. Adams Road.
The free event runs from 1 to 4 p.m. and closes out National Fire Prevention Week, which begins Sunday, Oct. 4.
Kids can operate a fire hose, try on firefighter gear and watch live demonstrations, including a kitchen grease-fire demo and an EMS vehicle-extrication simulation with air bag deployments, according to LittleGuide Detroit. Birmingham police, Oakland County Dive Team and HAZMAT equipment displays are also planned, along with the city's 1924 fire truck.
Free firehouse chili, hot dogs, popcorn and other refreshments will be served, according to Oakland County 115. Face painting and a raffle round out the afternoon.

Fire Prevention Week has been observed during the second week of October since the Great Chicago Fire began on Oct. 8, 1871. The Birmingham Fire Department's reminder for residents: if you have a fire, get out and stay out, then call 911.
