Birmingham Police Officer George Toma will skate with local kids on Tuesday, Oct. 6, at the department's second annual Donuts & Decks event.

The gathering runs from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Birmingham Skate Park, 2300 E. Lincoln St. Families can expect complimentary cider, donuts and a raffle for a new skateboard deck that Toma purchases out of pocket each year.

Toma, who skated for about eight years growing up, pitched the idea to the department when he was a first-year officer, C&G Newspapers reported. He also sought donations to help make the event happen.

Birmingham Police Chief Ryan Kearney told C&G Newspapers on Sept. 30 that the inaugural event was "a really good turnout and just a great event for kids and families." Kearney said Toma came to the department with the concept and planned the whole thing.

"We just want to let them know that … they can talk to us whenever they want, not just when something bad happens," Toma told C&G Newspapers.

In the same Sept. 30 interview, Toma said his goal is simple: "I really just want to get the kids outside again."

New for this year, Toma plans to share a resource to help kids and parents better understand e-bike and e-scooter safety.

The Birmingham Police Department's 2025 annual report listed Donuts & Decks among several new community events added to the department's calendar that year, describing it as "a chance to kick tricks with officers at our Skate Park."

The event is open to all families.
