PopUp Bagels, the Connecticut-founded bagel chain, is setting up shop at 34400 Woodward Ave. in Birmingham.

Storefront signs are already up at the former T-Mobile retail space, as reported by Metro Intelligencer. The location will be the brand's first in Michigan.

An opening date has not been announced.

Founder Adam Goldberg began PopUp Bagels as a backyard pickup concept in Westport, Connecticut, during the pandemic. The company says it debuted in Connecticut in 2021. The concept is stripped down by design: hot, whole bagels served without knives or sandwiches. Customers tear the bagels open and dip them into flavored cream cheese "schmears" or butters. The brand has trademarked the ritual as "Grip, Rip and Dip."

The menu offers five varieties: plain, sesame, salt, poppy seed and everything. Bagels are sold in packs of three or more.

The chain operates 49 stores in 18 states and has franchise agreements signed for 300 more, with a goal of reaching 100 open locations by the end of 2027. Investment firm Tiger Global Management bought a stake in the company at a $300 million valuation, Grub Street reported. In a Grub Street interview, Goldberg said his top priority is getting what he considers the best bagel to every part of America.

Beyond Michigan, PopUp Bagels announced plans in May to open more than 25 locations across New Jersey, according to a company press release.

The identity of the franchisee behind the Birmingham location has not been confirmed. PopUp Bagels has not announced an opening timeline. The brand posts updates on its Instagram account, @popupbagels.
