Bloomfield Hills mini-tour pro Grant Haefner is competing this week at Boyne Mountain Resort in a tournament limited to past Michigan champions, looking to finish what he started a year ago.

Haefner, who turned professional in 2022, has been on a tear in 2026. He won twice on the Minor League Golf Tour, including a 63-67 finish at Atlantic National Golf Club on Tuesday, February 24, and a playoff victory at the Florida Club 2-Day on Wednesday, April 29, where he birdied the first extra hole to outlast Ethan Davidson. His career earnings on that circuit total $46,078.

That momentum traces back to last summer's 33rd Tournament of Champions, where Haefner fired an opening-round 65 and built a four-shot lead before defending champion Jay Jurecic mounted a stunning comeback. Jurecic erased a two-shot deficit on the par-5 18th hole with a 260-yard 3-wood that bounced off the flagstick to inside one foot, setting up a tap-in eagle. In the sudden-death playoff, Jurecic's 45-yard pitch from the rough rolled to within five inches for another tap-in birdie to seal the $10,500 first-place check, the Walter Burkemo Trophy, and the traditional green blazer.

Now Haefner gets another shot.

The 34th Tournament of Champions began Monday, July 27, and runs through Wednesday, July 29, on the Alpine course. The 54-hole stroke-play event features 122 past Michigan champions competing for a $75,000 purse. A 36-hole cut to the low 70 and ties follows today's second round.

The field mixes professionals, amateurs, seniors, and juniors who have all won significant Michigan championships. It includes 11 Michigan Golf Hall of Fame members, 11 former Tournament of Champions winners, and 2021 U.S. Amateur champion James Piot, who now plays professionally. Six-time winner Jeff Roth, 2024 champion Joe Juszczyk, and two-time winner Barrett Kelpin are also entered.

Family pairings add texture: brother-sister duo Evan and Elayna Bowser, plus father-son teams Jack and John Seltzer, Jim and Austin Dieters, and the McAuliffe father-son pair.

"I will be there. It's a fun tournament and it was a thrill to win it last year," Jurecic, 56, of Crystal Falls said before the tournament, following a runner-up finish at the Yamaha Golf Cars Senior Open Championship. The former high school teacher is chasing a spot on the PGA Tour Champions.

Tournament director Justin Phillips of the Michigan Section PGA, which sanctions the event, said the 122-player field includes college players, mini-tour professionals, and several top Michigan PGA Section players and Hall of Fame members.

Gallery admission and parking are free. Live scoring is available at the Michigan PGA website. The champion will be crowned Wednesday, July 29.
