Cranbrook Academy of Art graduate Emily Endo will spend three months casting iron and brass at a Wisconsin factory in 2027.
Endo earned their master’s degree in fiber from Cranbrook in 2010. A jury selected Endo for the 2027 Arts/Industry Foundry residency at Kohler Co. in Kohler, Wisconsin, according to Cranbrook. They will work in the foundry from Jan. 25 through April 30, 2027.
More than 600 artists have participated in the program since the John Michael Kohler Arts Center and Kohler Co. established it in 1974.
Endo is part of a four-artist cohort that also includes Raul De Lara, Amy Yoes and Erin Jane Nelson. The John Michael Kohler Arts Center and Kohler Co. announced the full class of 12 artists in October, according to their joint announcement.
The program accommodates 12 artists annually in three-month sessions, with studios available around the clock. Its support includes housing, travel to and from the residency, industrial materials, technical assistance and a monthly honorarium, according to the announcement. Foundry residents work in cast iron and brass. The arts center and Kohler Foundation each receive one work created by every resident.
In February 2026, the John Michael Kohler Arts Center opened “Emily Endo: Estuary,” their largest exhibition to date and the institution’s first scent-focused show, according to the arts center’s exhibition announcement. The show paired original fragrances with works incorporating glass, metal, found shells and minerals, Cranbrook reported. One fragrance incorporated geosmin, a compound associated with the smell of wet soil.
Endo also served as the arts center’s first ExAIR artist-in-residence of 2026.
They work across sculpture, glass, scent and installation. Glass has long interested Endo for its associations with “magic, science, fragility, and preservation,” according to Cranbrook. Before their MFA at Cranbrook, they earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Maryland Institute College of Art. They chaired the fibers department at Oregon College of Art and Craft from 2013 to 2018.
Their work has been exhibited at Somerset House in London, Massey Klein in New York, LVL3 in Chicago and the Neutra VDL House in Los Angeles. It has been featured in American Craft, Architectural Digest and Dezeen. They live and work in California.
Applications for the 2028 Arts/Industry residency open Jan. 1, 2027, with a Feb. 28, 2027, deadline.
