Three Bloomfield Hills-area private schools claimed spots in the top seven of Niche's 2026 Best Private High Schools in Michigan rankings, with Cranbrook Schools earning the No. 1 spot out of 128 schools statewide.
The Roeper School landed at No. 4 and Academy of the Sacred Heart at No. 7. All three received an A+ overall grade from Niche, which bases its rankings on academics, college preparation, culture and diversity, student-teacher ratios and parent and student surveys.
All three sit within a five-mile radius in Bloomfield Hills and Birmingham.
Cranbrook: No. 1 in multiple categories
Cranbrook also ranks No. 1 in Michigan for best private K-12 schools and best boarding high schools, and No. 6 nationally among boarding K-12 schools, according to its Niche rankings page.
Founded in 1922, the school sits on a 319-acre National Historic Landmark campus and enrolls 1,673 students from preschool through 12th grade. More than 250 of its 811 upper school students board on campus, arriving from 22 states and 33 countries.
Head of School Dr. Jeff Suzik leads a faculty of 213, 90% of whom hold advanced degrees. Annual tuition runs approximately $44,100 for day students, though the school awards $12.8 million in financial aid each year, reaching 35% of families. The acceptance rate is 44%, compared with a national private school average of 88%.
Cranbrook's Horizons-Upward Bound program, established in 1965 with a Ford Foundation grant, serves 160 first-generation, college-bound high school students from metro Detroit at no cost annually.
Roeper: gifted education since 1941
The Roeper School, founded by George and Annemarie Roeper after they fled Nazi Germany, has spent more than 80 years specializing in gifted learners. Its upper school campus sits at 1051 Oakland Ave. in Birmingham, with a lower school campus on Woodward Avenue in Bloomfield Hills.
Head of School Anne Glass leads the 433-student school, which carries a 7:1 student-teacher ratio. Upper school tuition for 2026-27 is $39,360, and more than 40% of families receive tuition assistance averaging $12,000 per year.
Sacred Heart: Michigan's oldest independent school
Academy of the Sacred Heart, founded in 1851 in Detroit and relocated to its 28-acre Bloomfield Township campus in 1958, is the oldest independent school in Michigan. The Roman Catholic, college-preparatory school serves young women from infancy through 12th grade and boys from infancy through eighth grade.
Sacred Heart earned a 4.52-out-of-5 rating from 155 Niche reviewers and maintains a 7:1 student-teacher ratio across its enrollment of roughly 400 students. It belongs to the Network of Sacred Heart Schools, a group of 24 institutions across the U.S. and Canada.
