Birmingham families who use Crestview Park's playground will soon get a say in what replaces the aging equipment there, with an online survey expected at engage.bhamgov.org following the city's Aug. 4 public input session.

The Parks and Recreation Board hosted the session Tuesday, Aug. 4, where a playground designer presented three design concepts for the $300,000 renovation. The session had originally been scheduled for July 7 but was canceled when the board lacked a quorum.

Parks and Recreation Manager Carrie Laird said in a July 13 interview with the Birmingham Eagle that the park's current equipment offers good variety but has aged out. "There is a good variety of equipment there currently, it is just aging and needs to be replaced," Laird said. "We are hoping to accomplish the same kind of thing: a variety of equipment and accessibility improvement."

The $300,000 budget comes from Birmingham's voter-approved 2020 parks and recreation bond, which is funding playground replacements across the city over four years. Crestview follows Pumphouse Park, West Lincoln Well Park, Poppleton Park and Pembroke Park in the improvement pipeline, according to a May 2025 city manager's report.

Poppleton Park's new playground was under installation as of June 2026, according to a city manager's report that month, putting Crestview next in line.

Crestview Park, a neighborhood park known for its shaded playground area with mature trees, also features pickleball courts and an open field used for soccer and kite flying.

Director of Public Services Scott Zielinski said on July 13 that the city does not yet have an exact construction timeline. The next step: residents can weigh in through the online survey at engage.bhamgov.org, which was not yet live as of Wednesday, Aug. 5.
