A Glock 19 handgun stolen from an unlocked vehicle and a group retail theft at Dick's Sporting Goods headlined a week in which Bloomfield Township police fielded 675 calls for service, according to the department's weekly media report released Monday, July 20.

The July 13–19 period saw a sharp jump in activity compared with the prior week, when officers handled 436 calls. Traffic stops nearly doubled, rising from 178 to 299.

Handgun stolen from unlocked car

On Saturday, July 18, officers took three larceny-from-automobile reports. In each case the vehicle had been left unlocked and a wallet was taken. In one of those vehicles, a Glock 19 handgun was also stolen.

The department urged residents to lock their cars and remove valuables. All three cases were turned over to the Bloomfield Township Investigations Unit and remain under investigation.

Group retail fraud at Dick's Sporting Goods

On Sunday, July 19, at approximately 6:30 p.m. according to the police report, officers responded to Dick's Sporting Goods at 2105 S. Telegraph Road for a retail fraud in progress. A group of eight males and females, ages 17 to 25, ran through the store grabbing merchandise before fleeing in a white older-model Chevrolet Suburban and a white Chevrolet Blazer.

Two stolen clothing items valued at $220 were recovered from the parking lot. A Patch report published Wednesday, July 22, cited police as saying the group made off with 113 Nike apparel items worth roughly $10,800 total.

39 crashes, five OWI arrests

Officers investigated 39 traffic crashes during the week: 22 property-damage crashes, six hit-and-runs, five personal-injury crashes, five crashes on private property, and one car-versus-deer collision. The prior week recorded 24 total crashes.

Police made 22 arrests, matching the prior week's total. Five were for operating while intoxicated, five for driving on a suspended license, four on misdemeanor warrants, and one each for assault and battery, dangerous drug possession, malicious destruction of property, and open intoxicants.
