Birmingham Country Club wants to add a kitchen and snack bar to its clubhouse in Bloomfield Township, a project that needs both site plan and special land use approval from the township.
The proposal went before the Planning Commission at a public hearing Monday, July 20, at Bloomfield Township Hall, 4200 Telegraph Road.
The addition would be built at the club's clubhouse at 1750 Saxon Dr., which sits within Bloomfield Township despite the club's Birmingham mailing address. A public notice signed by Andrea Szajnecki, director of Bloomfield Township's Planning, Building, and Ordinance Department, did not include square footage, construction costs, or a project timeline for the addition.
Two approvals required
The project needs two layers of sign-off under the township's zoning ordinance: a site plan review and a special land use permit. The Planning Commission serves as an advisory body, forwarding its recommendation to the Township Board of Trustees for a final vote. No date has been confirmed for the Board of Trustees to take up the matter.
The clubhouse
The English-style clubhouse opened in 1930, designed by architect Cyril Edward Schley and built by the R.F. Tillotson Building Company at a cost of just under $200,000. The club itself dates to 1916, when six men purchased the 161-acre Case farm and converted it into a golf club. In 2016, Birmingham Country Club completed an $8 million renovation of the clubhouse and course to mark its centennial, according to the club's published history.
