Downtown Birmingham will shut down stretches of Old Woodward Avenue and Maple Road on Saturday, July 25, as two free, family-friendly events take over the streets: the Birmingham Shopping District's annual Day on the Town sale and the Birmingham Police Department's fourth annual Open House.

Road closures

Old Woodward Avenue will be closed to vehicles from Willits Street to Brown Street.

Maple Road will be closed from Bates Street to Peabody Street for retail displays and pedestrian traffic.

Day on the Town: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

More than 70 retailers will set up discounted merchandise in stores and along the sidewalks of downtown Birmingham, with markdowns up to 70 percent at participating shops, according to the Birmingham Shopping District. Stores taking part include Roots, Found Objects, Serena and Lily, Skin House, Bobbles and Lace, MASQ Beauty, and Gazelle Sports.

"Be sure to arrive early to take advantage of the best deals," said Jaimi Brook, Birmingham Shopping District operations and events manager.

Food trucks will line the streets. The Channel 955 Ice Cream Truck will hand out free ice cream from noon to 2 p.m. while supplies last.

Parking is free in all municipal structures during the event. A full list of participating retailers is posted at downtownbirmingham.com/dayonthetown.

Police Open House: 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Three blocks away, the Birmingham Police Department will host its fourth annual Open House on Martin and Pierce streets in front of City Hall. Chief Scott A. Grewe, who has led the department since December 2022, will be on hand alongside officers, K-9 units, and the department's therapy dog, Maple.

Visitors can watch a live drone demonstration. The department acquired its drone fleet in 2024 for event monitoring and missing-person searches, according to its 2025 Annual Report. Vehicle displays and hands-on activities round out the lineup.

The events are three blocks apart, making it easy to hit both on foot.
