Bloomfield Township residents on Bradway Avenue face up to 14 days without driveway access as two construction crews work the street simultaneously.

Bradway closed completely at Lahser Road on Friday, Sept. 25, for installation of a concrete gutter across the intersection, according to a construction update from Bloomfield Village Roads. The closure will last up to five days while the concrete cures.

On the same day, subcontractor Goretski Construction began installing curbs on Bradway west of Hamilton. Residents on that stretch were told to remove all vehicles from garages and driveways by 6:30 a.m. on the date shown on front door notices posted at each home. Anyone who misses the deadline risks being blocked in for the full 14-day stretch.

The work is part of the Green Section Special Assessment District (SAD), the fifth and final section of Bloomfield Village's road reconstruction program. The Bloomfield Township Board of Trustees approved the SAD unanimously on April 27, with a final per-lot assessment of $39,373, down from an earlier estimate of $52,570.

Allied Construction, the project's primary contractor, completed Phase 1 paving on Wednesday, Sept. 23. Streets in that phase were expected to reopen by the end of that day.

Two crews are working on Bradway at the same time, with materials and equipment stored in the road and blocking the street in multiple places. Allied is also using Bradway Park for material storage and staging, generating significant truck traffic in the area.

The Sept. 23 update included a safety warning. Several residents have driven past flaggers or barricades and come dangerously close to moving construction equipment, the update said, including driving underneath the arm of an excavator while it was in operation.

That is not a minor risk.

Bradway residents who need to reach their homes during the Lahser closure can detour via Tuckahoe Road from either Lahser or Maple. Barricades mark closed intersections on side streets. The update urged anyone who does not live on Bradway to avoid the street entirely.

Residents on Bradway west of Hamilton who lose driveway access can park on side streets north or south of Bradway. Those with mobility issues can contact Mark Meszler, the township's project representative, at [email protected].

Wayne Dabrowski, project engineer for the Road Commission for Oakland County (RCOC), is the primary contact for construction questions. Meszler, a former RCOC employee hired by the township to represent residents, shares oversight.

Curbs on the west end are scheduled for completion today, Monday Sept. 28, with concrete driveways starting Tuesday, Sept. 29. Looking further ahead, milling on the west end of Bradway is set to begin the week of Oct. 5, and curb work on Bradway east of Hamilton is expected around Oct. 12. Phase 2 paving, the second and final layer of asphalt, has no firm date but is expected within weeks of the Sept. 23 update.
