Seaholm wins by one, Groves routed in Week 5

Birmingham Seaholm escaped Oak Park with a 21-20 win on Friday, Sept. 25, in the closest finish of a split Week 5 for area football teams.

The OAA Blue road victory moved Seaholm coach DeWald's squad to 3-2 overall and 2-1 in the division, according to MaxPreps. The Maples had entered the game coming off a 14-13 loss to crosstown rival Groves on Sept. 18.

One point was the difference. Seaholm hosts Southfield Arts & Technology on Friday, Oct. 2, at 7 p.m.

Bloomfield Hills, Country Day win

Bloomfield Hills posted a 28-20 victory over West Bloomfield in an OAA matchup. The Black Hawks improved to 2-3 overall and snapped a three-game losing streak (losses to Lake Orion, Rochester and Stoney Creek), according to MaxPreps, heading into a trip to Troy Athens on Friday, Oct. 2, at 7 p.m.

In Beverly Hills, Detroit Country Day shut down U-D Jesuit 17-3 in a Catholic League-AA game. The Yellowjackets moved to 3-2 overall and 1-0 in league play, riding a two-game winning streak. Senior tight end Anthony Cartwright III, an Oregon commit, is among the players to watch as Country Day hosts Loyola on Oct. 2 at 7 p.m.

Groves falls to Harper Woods

Groves fell 41-13 at home to Harper Woods in an OAA Blue game on Sept. 25.

Harper Woods senior Dakota Guerrant, a wide receiver and defensive back committed to Oregon, had been described by MLive as a "touchdown machine" heading into the matchup. Individual stats from the game were not available.

After Groves' Sept. 18 win over Seaholm, Falcons senior running back Jeremiah Whitley told the Detroit Free Press: "The only team that can beat us is us." Coach Brendan Flaherty's squad now sits at 3-2 overall and 2-1 in the OAA Blue. Groves travels to Oak Park on Friday, Oct. 2, at 6:30 p.m.

Cranbrook's unbeaten run ends

Cranbrook Kingswood fell 36-29 at Sanford Meridian, ending a 4-0 start to the season. The Cranes had outscored opponents 177-22 through their first four games, including three wins by 25 points or more. That streak is over.

Cranbrook entered Week 5 ranked 27th in Division 3 MHSAA playoff points, according to MLive, inside the 32-team qualifying field. At 4-1, the Cranes travel to Ann Arbor Gabriel Richard on Oct. 2 at 7 p.m.
