Detroit Country Day edged Cranbrook Kingswood 34-33 to win the MHSAA Division 3 boys tennis state championship on Saturday, Oct. 17.
The one-point margin mirrored last year's Division 3 final, when Cranbrook topped Country Day by the same 34-33 score. This time the Beverly Hills school flipped the result at the Greater Midland Tennis Center, claiming its first outright D3 title since 2014, according to MLive. Country Day had finished as runner-up seven times since then and shared the 2024 title with Ann Arbor Greenhills.
The Yellowjackets reached the championship match in seven of eight flights. Freshman Nicholas Nadjarian earned the No. 4 singles title with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Cranbrook's Henry DeMuth. The No. 4 doubles team of Sasha Kebl and Sebastian Shah, seeded second, upset Cranbrook's top-seeded Jaiden Swami and Stanley Shen 4-6, 6-4, 6-2.
Cranbrook won two singles championships and one doubles championship. Freshman Jacob Yang defeated Country Day junior Ricky Jeong, taking the No. 1 singles final 7-6, 3-6, 6-1. Jeong had won state titles as a freshman and sophomore.
Country Day sophomore Samuel Kole-James repeated as No. 2 singles champion, defeating Cranbrook freshman Trevor Ilitch 2-6, 7-5, 7-6 (4). His victory secured the team championship, according to the MHSAA’s recap.
Cranbrook junior Eli Rosen won the No. 3 singles title, beating Chelsea's Gavin Heinze 6-1, 5-7, 7-5. Cranbrook seniors Ryan VanDyke and Josh Day took the No. 1 doubles championship over Country Day's Shiv Kumar and Adam Mahmoud 6-2, 7-6 (1).
Holland Christian finished third with 24 points, followed by Ann Arbor Greenhills at 23.
Bloomfield Hills Black Hawks at Division 1 finals
In Division 1, Bloomfield Hills finished with 11 team points at the state finals, which concluded Thursday, Oct. 15, at the Greater Midland Tennis Center.
The Black Hawks' highlight came at No. 3 doubles, where Ari Raykenstein and Ari Young knocked off the No. 1 seeds, Brad Bagley and Aaditya Manikandan, in the semifinals. Raykenstein and Young advanced to the final but fell to Brother Rice's Dylan Fisher and Sam Dimerman in three sets, according to The Oakland Press.
That semifinal upset prevented Troy from sweeping all four doubles flights. Troy won the D1 team title ahead of Brother Rice at 20 and Ann Arbor Pioneer at 19. Bloomfield Hills tied for ninth in the team standings, according to the MHSAA’s final results.
The fall tennis season is complete for all three area programs.
