Families caring for a loved one with dementia now have a new monthly meeting place in Birmingham.
Birmingham Next launches its Dementia Caregiver Support Group on Tuesday, Aug. 11, from 11 a.m. to noon at the nonprofit's Midvale Street center. It meets monthly, every second Tuesday.
The group is open to all caregivers navigating dementia, not just Birmingham Next members, according to the organization's program listing. Memory-care professionals will facilitate each session, offering practical advice and connecting caregivers with resources.
The new group arrives during Birmingham Next's final full summer at 2121 Midvale St. City records show the Birmingham City Commission approved plans in January for the nonprofit to relocate to 400 E. Lincoln in May 2027.
The regional Area Agency on Aging, AgeWays, lists Birmingham Next as a caregiver services resource and notes that support services are available to both members and the general public. The nonprofit, which has served the area's 50-and-older population since 1978, is administered through Birmingham Public Schools. Executive Director Cris Braun oversees programming.
