At least five commercial tenants along Bloomfield Township's busiest corridors will ask for sign variances at the Sept. 8 Zoning Board of Appeals hearing, part of a packed 21-appeal agenda.

Patty & Press Smashburgers, which is planning a new Bloomfield Township location at 42983 Woodward Ave., wants two 28-square-foot wall signs on the north and east facades. Township code allows only one accessory sign per property. The restaurant is expected to open around September or October, according to WhatNow Detroit.

Fifth Third Bank, which completed its $12.3 billion acquisition of Comerica Bank in February, is seeking a 48-square-foot wall sign plus a 28-square-foot ground sign at 43332 Woodward Ave. The ZBA notice describes the location as "formerly Comerica Bank." Fifth Third plans to convert Comerica's customer systems on Sept. 8, the same day as the hearing. Separately, the bank plans to close 75 Michigan branches on Sept. 3 and 4 as part of the merger integration, Michigan Public reported in June.

The branch closures target overlapping locations. "In a number of cases, literally they share parking lots, so this was always part of the strategy," Steve Davis, Fifth Third's Michigan region president, told Michigan Public in June.

Village Pharmacy, a new tenant at 3580 W. Maple Road, is requesting a monument sign that would encroach 4 feet, 6 inches into the required 25-foot right-of-way setback, plus an 11-square-foot wall sign. Two other commercial tenants are also on the agenda: Naked at 2527 S. Telegraph Road wants a 16-square-foot wall sign and to reface part of an existing ground sign, and M Victors Care at 4190 Telegraph Road is seeking a second wall sign on its rear facade.

The commercial requests follow similar cases scheduled for the Aug. 11 ZBA hearing, including sign variances for properties at 42931 Woodward Ave. and 43003 Woodward Ave.

Beyond the commercial cases, Mulberry Square Apartments at 225 E. Square Lake Road is seeking permission for carports and to resurface parking spaces at 17 feet, 6 inches wide when 20 feet is required. The remaining 15 appeals are residential requests involving setbacks, accessory structures, fences and retaining walls at properties across the township.
