Cranbrook Institute of Science is opening its Bloomfield Hills museum for a book fair aimed at adults for the first time, with local bookstores, cocktails and author signings filling the halls on Saturday, Aug. 29.

After Dark: Pages & Pours runs from 6 to 10 p.m. at the museum, 39221 Woodward Ave. The 21-and-over event brings five local bookstores, more than 20 vendors, three featured authors and a signature cocktail called the "Book Worm" under one roof.

The evening is part of Cranbrook's established After Dark series, which offers adults-only programming each year from Valentine's Day through Halloween. But a literary theme is new territory for the science institution, which typically fills its after-hours events with mini lectures and interactive science activities.

Five bookstores anchor the fair: Love & Other Books, Next Chapter Bookshop, Toadvine Books, Rainbow Reads Bookseller and Vesper Books & Wine. Authors K. Aten, Meredith Dimick and Chuck Locklear will be on hand for signings.

Beyond browsing, the schedule includes literature trivia rounds at 6:30, 7:30 and 8:30 p.m., bookmark-making stations and live "Action Off the Pages!" battle demonstrations. Food will be available on-site.

The institute described the event on its website as a chance for guests to browse local bookstores and vendors, meet authors and take part in book-inspired activities throughout the museum.

Drinks are sold separately: beer tickets run $9, while wine or the signature cocktail cost $13. The Book Worm mixes vodka, pineapple, apple and ginger ale, garnished with a gummy worm.

Advance tickets are $40 for general admission and $34 for Cranbrook members. Prices rise to $45 and $38.25 at the door. Online sales close Friday, Aug. 28, at 11:59 p.m. The first 200 registered guests receive a commemorative tote bag, and every ticket includes one raffle entry. A raffle drawing is scheduled for approximately 9:15 p.m., with additional tickets available for $2 each, $5 for three or $15 for 10.

Among the 20-plus vendors: Bow's Bookshelf, Crazy Good Soap, A Pensive Man's Coffee, Murder Mitten Workshop, The Moss & Mushroom Shop and Rose n' Blooms.
