Cranbrook Institute of Science in Bloomfield Hills will shut its doors for 10 days next month, closing for annual maintenance from Wednesday, Sept. 9 through Friday, Sept. 18.
Normal hours resume Saturday, Sept. 19, according to the museum's event calendar.
The closure affects the entire facility at 39221 Woodward Ave., including the Reflections Café. Families planning September visits should also note the museum is closed Saturday, Aug. 15, for a separate one-day shutdown listed on its visit page.
Sky-watching events before the closure
The institute has a packed August calendar before the maintenance window. On Wednesday, Aug. 12, the museum is hosting a Discovery Days event tied to a partial solar eclipse visible across Michigan. The eclipse begins in Detroit at 1:03 p.m., peaks at 1:36 p.m. and ends at 2:08 p.m. Warren Astronomical Society members have telescopes on site, and the Cranbrook Observatory is open from 1 to 3 p.m. Activities are free with museum admission.
Later in August, a Blood Moon partial lunar eclipse event features an eclipse-themed planetarium show, observatory viewing and moon trivia. The eclipse becomes visible around 10:30 p.m. and peaks shortly after midnight. Pre-registered tickets cost $20 for the general public and $17.50 for members.
A Perseid Meteor Shower Viewing rounds out the sky-watching lineup with a naturalist-led dusk nature walk, artist-designed mini golf at Cranbrook Art Museum, a live-narrated planetarium program, a scale Planet Walk and telescope viewing with the Warren Astronomical Society. Pre-registered tickets are $50; members pay $42.50. Walk-up tickets add $5, pending availability.
Planning your visit
Regular museum hours are Wednesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Extended hours run until 11 p.m. on the first and third Friday of each month. General admission is $17 for adults, $14 for children ages 2–12 and seniors 65 and older, and free for children under 2 and all members. Through the Museums for All program, visitors with an EBT, Bridge or WIC card pay $2 for two adults and all children under 18.
