Fall sports tryouts at Birmingham Groves High School begin Monday, Aug. 10, with 10 programs holding first practices across campus and beyond.

Athletic director Diedra Righter posted the full tryout schedule on Aug. 7, emphasizing that every athlete must complete registration on FinalForms and upload a current physical dated after April 15, 2026 before stepping on a field. Athletes who need to miss any session must contact their coach in advance.

Fees run $160 to $195.

Here's what families need to know, sport by sport:

Football departs for camp Sunday, Aug. 9. Head coach Brendan Flaherty leads the program. Fee: $195.

Boys soccer tryouts run Aug. 10–11 in the stadium, 9–11 a.m. Fee: $160.

Girls volleyball tryouts span Aug. 10–12. Freshmen report 3:30–5:30 p.m.; JV and varsity go 5:30–7:30 p.m. Head coach Madison Meyer requires attendance all three days. Fee: $180.

Boys and girls cross country begins at the Groves track at 8:30 a.m. Monday. Boys head coach Derek Puishes and girls head coach Jim Sherman lead the programs. Fee: $160.

Girls swim and dive practices off-campus at the Beverly Hills Athletic Club (swimming, 8–10 a.m.) and at Groves (diving, 5:30–7:30 p.m.). Head swimming coach Nick Valice and dive coach Matt Egbers run the sessions. Fee: $160.

Boys water polo hits the Groves pool Monday, 5:30–8:30 p.m., under head coach Nolan Kamoo.

Girls golf opens at the Royal Oak Golf Range at 10 a.m. Monday, with a second session Tuesday, Aug. 11 at 4 p.m. Head coach Marc West leads the team. Fee: $180.

Boys tennis starts on the Groves courts Monday, noon. Head coach Robert Chonoles runs the program. Fee: $160.

United girls field hockey, a combined Groves/Seaholm team hosted at Seaholm, also begins Monday under head coach Amy Murray. Fee: $160.

United girls flag football, the other Groves/Seaholm shared program, is the lone outlier. Practice begins Aug. 24 under head coach Geoff Wickersham. Fee: $160.

Fees and financial aid

The Birmingham Public Schools district's Pay to Participate fees are due one week after final rosters are set and are separate from booster dues.
