A Groves High School student who needs a clean pair of shoes or a backpack before classes start Aug. 31 will be able to walk into The One Love Project and take what they need, no questions asked.

The new upcycle boutique, collecting donations at the school's front office in Beverly Hills, offers free clothing, school supplies, toiletries and household items to any student. The only ask: write a gratitude note to a classmate, teacher or staff member.

Kristina Swanson, a Groves receptionist and parent, built the program after learning about Bloom, the upcycle boutique run by community partner Schools Offer Support out of Seaholm High School's cafeteria. Bloom is open weekly to all Birmingham Public Schools students.

Swanson wants every student to feel welcome, not just those in financial need.

"It's for everybody. So, the children that do need those things feel comfortable going in there and not be worried that other people are watching them going in there," Swanson told C&G News.

The donation list is broad: Groves spirit wear, gently used teen and adult clothing, coats, shoes, jewelry, purses, books, school and office supplies, toiletries, cleaning products, pet supplies and college gear. Items can be dropped in the donation box at Groves' front office vestibule, 20500 W. 13 Mile Road, Beverly Hills.

Dr. Embekka Roberson, superintendent of Birmingham Public Schools, said the boutique aligns with the district's strategic plan, specifically its "Culture of Unity and Well-Being" pillar focused on equitable access to resources.

The first day of school is Monday, Aug. 31. That gives families roughly three weeks to fill the donation box before students walk through the doors. No official opening date for the boutique has been announced.
