Bloomfield Hills native Luke Newman secured a spot on the Chicago Bears' 53-man roster for the 2026 NFL season.

The Bears finalized their roster Sunday, Aug. 30, ahead of the league's deadline, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. Newman was among 10 offensive linemen to make the cut. The 24-year-old guard will compete for a starting job when Chicago opens the regular season Sept. 13 against the Carolina Panthers.

Newman attended Brother Rice High School in Bloomfield Township before playing four seasons at Holy Cross, where he was a two-time FCS All-American and three-time First-Team All-Patriot League selection. He graduated with an economics degree in 2024.

He then transferred to Michigan State, starting all 12 games at left guard and leading the Spartans with 739 offensive snaps. Pro Football Focus graded him the No. 9 offensive guard in the Big Ten that season. He became the first Spartan drafted under Michigan State head coach Jonathan Smith when the Bears selected him in the sixth round, 195th overall, in the 2025 NFL Draft.

"It's a very unique and special moment … I'm almost at a loss for words for a moment quite like this," Newman said on draft night in April 2025, surrounded by friends and family at his Metro Detroit home.

During his rookie season in 2025, Newman served as a backup before stepping in at right guard in Week 12 against the Pittsburgh Steelers after starter Jonah Jackson left with an injury. A foot injury later sent Newman to injured reserve. He was activated in late December.

Newman is one of 10 offensive linemen on the active roster, according to Bleacher Nation. The Bears still plan to work the waiver wire and build their 16-man practice squad before the Sept. 13 opener in Charlotte.
