Birmingham and Bloomfield area voters will choose a new member of Congress, a state senator and Oakland Community College trustees on Tuesday, Nov. 3.

Oakland County published its unofficial candidate list Aug. 25, identifying candidates in several races that include Birmingham and Bloomfield-area voters. The list remains labeled unofficial by Oakland County Elections.

11th Congressional District

State Sen. Jeremy Moss of Bloomfield Township won the Aug. 4 Democratic primary with about 49% of the vote in a four-candidate field, the Detroit Free Press reported. He will face Troy Mayor Ethan Baker, the Republican nominee, along with Libertarian Farid Ishac of Waterford, Green Party candidate Ryan Teasdale of Waterford, and Anil Kumar of Bloomfield Hills, who filed with No Party Affiliation.

The seat opened after U.S. Rep. Haley Stevens of Birmingham left to run for U.S. Senate. The district covers Birmingham, Bloomfield Township, Bloomfield Hills, and more than two dozen other Oakland County communities.

Moss has served as Michigan Senate president pro tempore since January 2023. He previously served two terms in the Michigan House and on the Southfield City Council. If elected, he would become Michigan's first openly gay member of Congress, The Hill reported.

After calling the nomination "an incredible honor," Moss said the seat "opened up right at a moment of peril in our country that demanded tested and trusted leadership," according to The Detroit News.

Baker, who has been Troy's mayor since 2019, ran unopposed in the Republican primary. The Cook Political Report rates the district as solidly Democratic. Moss reported more than $414,000 cash on hand at the end of June compared with less than $96,000 for Baker.

State Senate 7th District

Republican Anthony Paesano of Bloomfield Hills will face Democrat Jason Hoskins of Southfield for a four-year term. Paesano ran unopposed in the Republican primary. Hoskins, a state representative, won a three-way Democratic primary over Shadia Martini and Rakesh Ramakrishnan.

Oakland Community College Board

Seven candidates are competing for two six-year seats on the nonpartisan Oakland Community College Board of Trustees. Jacqueline A. Kelly of Birmingham is among them. The other candidates are Jose F. Aliaga of Clarkston, Marian Blocker of West Bloomfield, MiVida M. Burrus of Troy, Robin L. McGregor of Waterford, Alexandra Morgan of Lake Orion and Deborah Snyder of Orchard Lake.

Tuesday, Nov. 3 is Election Day. Voters can view the full candidate list on the Oakland County Elections website.
