Oakland County's website and email addresses have switched from OakGov.com to OaklandCountyMI.gov.
The change, first reported by MLive, means the county now uses a .gov domain reserved exclusively for verified U.S. government organizations. County officials said the move makes it easier for residents to confirm they are dealing with an official government site, not an impersonator.
County officials announced the transition Monday, Sept. 21. The new website itself went live Saturday, Sept. 19, alongside a new content management system, according to the county's FAQ page.
The county chose "OaklandCountyMI" to distinguish itself from other communities named Oakland across the country, according to the FAQ page.
Employee email addresses now follow the format [email protected]. Usernames did not change. Messages sent to old @OakGov.com addresses will automatically redirect to the new ones, the county said in its press release.
What residents should do
For most residents, no immediate action is required. The county advises updating bookmarks and replacing any saved Oakland County email addresses in contact lists. Residents should recognize OaklandCountyMI.gov as the official domain going forward.
Businesses, vendors and community partners who regularly communicate with the county face a longer checklist. The county asks them to update:
- Saved Oakland County email addresses
- Website links and bookmarks
- Vendor and customer records
- Email security and allow lists
- Automated systems that send information to county email addresses
Some county applications and online services may temporarily keep their existing web addresses while related systems are updated, according to the FAQ page. Existing pages will direct visitors to the correct services.
Old OakGov.com web addresses and email addresses will keep working during the transition, though the county has not set a public deadline for when those redirects will end.
The county's social media handle on X remains @OakGov and has not yet been updated to reflect the new branding.
