Birmingham police investigators are reviewing cellphone videos posted to social media as they work to identify participants in the Aug. 9 brawl at Willits and Bates streets, according to C&G Newspapers.

The move marks a shift in the investigation after surveillance footage from the scene proved too poor in quality to identify anyone involved in the fight, which drew an estimated 20 to 40 people into the roadway outside Sidecar Slider Bar around 12:56 a.m. that Sunday.

Officers arrived within about a minute of the dispatch call but found only verbal arguments still underway. No one was arrested. No victims filed police reports. The only injury reported was a person who scraped their hand after falling.

Police said limited cooperation from participants and potential witnesses left them without suspects at the scene.

The department is combing through videos that went viral on social media and were broadcast by regional news outlets, including footage recorded by a man identified by FOX 2 Detroit as Garcia Braggs, who provided an additional camera angle exclusively to the station.

Police Chief Ryan Kearney, who was sworn in Aug. 12 after 23 years with the department, declined to elaborate on the investigation's progress.

"Our release was our statement. We don't have any further comment on this incident at this time. It is still under investigation," Kearney told C&G Newspapers on Aug. 17.

The department announced Aug. 13 that it would increase vehicle, bicycle and foot patrols downtown. The Birmingham Fire Department said it would conduct unscheduled occupancy inspections at downtown businesses to ensure they are not exceeding capacity limits.

Business owners along Old Woodward Avenue have voiced support for the stepped-up presence. Marko Juncaj, general manager of Terra Kitchen & Cocktails, told WXYZ after the patrol announcement Aug. 13 that the fights have hurt downtown businesses. Suela Maklaj, general manager of Bell Bistro, told the station she no longer feels safe walking to the parking lot after weekend shifts.

No charges have been filed. The case remains open.
