Bradway residents in Bloomfield Township must pick up their own mail after the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) suspended delivery to the street during road construction, according to an Oct. 7 Bloomfield Village Roads update.
The suspension followed an incident the previous week, according to the update. The post says a mail carrier drove around a cone marking a driveway approach as inaccessible, entered anyway and ended up in an edge drain ditch, damaging the truck. The post says USPS indicated delivery will not resume until construction is completed.
Residents must now go to the post office at 2050 South Blvd., just west of Opdyke Road, to request their mail, according to the post. As of the afternoon of Tuesday, Oct. 6, the Bradway mail had not been sorted. Workers had to search through several piles to find mail for a given address, the post said.
The post says USPS cited carrier safety for the decision. But Cathy Weissenborn noted the Postal Service had safely delivered mail "throughout construction of more than 10 miles of road" in four other village sections and more than half of the Green section before suspending service on Bradway.
The Postal Service did not notify the Village of the suspension until the Village contacted USPS about the lack of delivery, according to the post. Representatives at the South Boulevard post office told Bloomfield Village Roads they do not intend to further notify residents.
Bloomfield Township officials are working with the Postmaster to reinstate delivery, according to the blog post. The post gives no restoration date beyond completion of construction.
FedEx, UPS and Amazon package deliveries appear unaffected, according to the post. Allied, the construction contractor, will continue to work with those carriers to allow them through during construction, the post says.
Road work is ongoing. Milling on Bradway is scheduled to begin early the week of Monday, Oct. 19, with Allied planning to remove asphalt over three to four days, according to a separate Village Roads construction update. The first layer of paving could begin late in the week of Oct. 26. If the sub-grade is not ready, paving would likely begin early in the week of Nov. 2. All planned timing is weather permitting.
The intersection of Bradway and Lahser remains closed until paving is complete. Residents with questions can contact Mark Meszler, the Bloomfield Township representative for the project, at [email protected].
