Western Market, a Ferndale grocery the Selvaggio family has run since 1983, plans to open a second store in Bloomfield Township in fall 2026.

The new location, called Nourish by Western Market, will occupy 13,880 square feet at 42931 Woodward Ave. in the Woodward Square Shopping Center. The space formerly housed a Rite Aid that sat vacant for about two years, according to Downtown Publications.

The store is owned by Steve Selvaggio and his son, also Steven Selvaggio. The new location will focus on prepared foods and deli items alongside locally sourced groceries, cheese and charcuterie, produce, meat and seafood, bakery goods, beer, wine and liquor.

Bloomfield Township trustees unanimously approved the site plan and a special land use request for the store, including a liquor license, at a public hearing on Feb. 23. The space previously housed a grocery store before the Rite Aid, according to Downtown Publications, which reported on the approval in February. Bloomfield Township Director of Planning, Building and Ordinances Andrea Bibby confirmed the earlier grocery use.

Steve Selvaggio told township board members the owners worked with neighboring residents to address concerns. Changes included redesigned outdoor lighting that will not shine into the residential area, a brick retaining wall to screen grocery carts outside the store, and rubbish stored inside the building.

The store's website describes the Bloomfield location as a fresh chapter built on the same values as the original Ferndale store. Offerings listed include local Michigan brands, eggs and dairy, and pantry items.

Trustees approved it unanimously.

In January 2026, the owners sought dimensional variances from the township's Zoning Board of Appeals for a loading dock and three wall signs totaling 125 square feet at the site. As of the February board approval, the only remaining steps were state and township approval of the spirits license and signage.
