Bloomfield Township residents on six streets in the Green Section will lose driveway access for roughly two weeks starting around Aug. 20, as the neighborhood road reconstruction project moves into its most disruptive stretch.
The Road Commission of Oakland County posted an update July 30 outlining the Phase 2 concrete schedule and a paving timeline that will bring full street closures to Phase 1 streets by the end of August.
Phase 2: Tuckahoe, Sunnydale, Hupp Cross, Morningview, Drury, Overhill
Crews from Allied Construction began stripping sod and topsoil on the second sides of those six streets during the week of July 29, with curb and driveway approach removals starting late that week. Goretski Construction will install new curbs Thursday, Aug. 20, and Friday, Aug. 21 with driveway approaches following Monday, Aug. 24. Residents on those streets should plan to park elsewhere for about two weeks starting around Aug. 20.
Temporary stone will be placed to maintain driveway access during the removal period, though the RCOC warned there may be a delay of several hours between removal and stone placement.
Phase 1 paving: full closures ahead
On Phase 1 streets, including Amberly, Endsleigh, Covington Place, and Glengarry, concrete work is finished. Allied anticipates milling and grading will begin around the week of Aug. 24, with paving the week of Aug. 31.
The key detail for residents: on the day a street is paved, it will be completely closed to all traffic, with no driveway access in or out. Allied expects to reopen streets once asphalt cools, usually by end of day. Streets are paved in two layers, or "lifts," with several weeks possible between the first and second passes. Traffic can drive on the first lift in the interim.
Once existing asphalt is milled, the road surface will sit lower than curbs and adjacent streets. Allied will provide temporary stone ramps, but the RCOC cautioned that low-profile vehicles, including some sports cars, may struggle with the grade change.
Bradway: after Labor Day
Allied anticipates Bradway construction will begin after Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 7. During that phase, intersections with cross-streets will be blocked and through-traffic limited, requiring detours.
The RCOC has notified Birmingham Public Schools' Transportation Department and requested that no school children need to cross Bradway to reach bus stops during construction. BPS will adjust routes and contact affected families directly.
As we reported July 23, Phase 1 curb installation had already blocked driveways for up to two weeks on those streets. The Green Section is the fifth and final phase of the Bloomfield Village road reconstruction, approved unanimously by the Township Board of Trustees on April 27 with a per-parcel assessment of $39,373.
